PLEASE Vote for My Mom & I - Sister of the Heart Photo Contest ENDS TONIGHT 3/15!
0 Comments Posted by Heather from Frugal Southern Living at 2:35 AMI just entered my Mom and I into the "Sister of the Heart" photo contest! Of course, I would end up entering on the very last day, but I am hopeful with all my wonderful blog readers that we will have enough votes in no time... please don't think that I'll have enough without your vote - every vote counts!
Susan Mallery, author of "Three Sisters" is giving away a $250 spa gift certificate! All you have to do is upload a photo of you and your "Sister of the Heart" - in this case, it was my Mom and add a caption of 150 words or less, then get your friends & family to vote for you! The top 5 vote-getters will be finalists and Susan Mallery will choose a winner!
Here is what I wrote about my incredible Mom:
"My Mom is definitely a sister of my heart! She is my confidant, advice giver, a great listener, always there and my friend! She has fought and won the battle with cancer and shown me what true strength is over the years. She does so much for me, our family, our community and everyone else that I would LOVE to treat her to a spa day!"

*GIVEAWAY* The Great Amazing Race Adventure & Family Event is coming to Tampa, FL!
0 Comments Posted by Heather from Frugal Southern Living at 2:29 PMI am VERY excited to bring you an incredible opportunity for a fun family event! As most of you know by now, I am trying hard to cross things off my "30 before 30" list by July.. #5 being to "Run a Half Marathon". Don't worry this event is NOT a half marathon, but while searching for 5K's to run I came across the "Great Amazing Race". If you've seen the TV show like me, the name itself automatically draws you in. I admit, I hate running.. so the first thing that appealed to me was that it was more than just a "run" it was an obstacle course.. and as I began reading more about this event I found out that it is actually for the whole family! BAM! That was it, sign me up! I have seen 5K's that also have a "Family Mile Run/Walk" or "Kid Fun Run", but never one that was designed specifically to be a family event itself or as grand as this event. Let me first introduce you to the Great Amazing Race (in case you have not heard of it) and then I'll explain how you can get involved.
Here is some information I found about the race from their press release:
"Kids in Grade 1 thru 12 can pair up with or race against parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors and family members while completing a one mile course filled with a string of fun challenges patterned after the show THE AMAZING RACE. Children in Kindergarten or Pre-K can also participate, but must be paired up with an adult. This rain or shine event pits teams of two against other teams racing around a one mile cross country course that includes up to eight fun filled challenge stations. Secret clue cards at each station instruct the teams to complete a task (game, relay, obstacle course, etc) before proceeding to the next challenge station. Contestants should be prepared to get a little wet and dirty - it's part of the fun! The team that reaches the finish line with the fastest overall time wins. How well you work as a team is the most essential ingredient to winning the race. Whether you run, jog, walk or watch, it will be a bonding experience you will never forget."
The Great Amazing Race also teams up with professional athletes and offers participants an opportunity to get autographs and take pictures with the celebrities. I am a HUGE Tampabay Buccaneers fan, so I'm hoping there will be some players at the event! If I find out any more on this, I'll let you know!
Check out this slide show that I found on their website:
The race in Tampa will kick-off at 2pm on Sunday, April 21st at Oscar Cooler Park in Lutz! Not near Tampa? No worries, check out the Great Amazing Race website for other race locations possibly near you in:
- Shreveport (March 15)
- Memphis (March 17)
- Dallas (March 24)
- Kansas City (April 6)
- St Louis (April 7)
- West Palm (April 20)
- Tampa (April 21)
- Columbus (April 27)
- Pittsburgh (April 28)
- Philadelphia (April 28)
- Indianapolis (May 4)
- Cincinanti (May 5)
- Nashville (May 11)
- Mobile (May 12)
The cost is $40 per TEAM (remember each team is a pair of 2 - either 2 kids, 2 adults or kid/adult combo). Active duty, reserves and retired - military, law enforecement and fire, including spouses - receive a 50% discount off team entry fee. Spectators are welcome to tag along for free and take photos. NOTE: Registration will CLOSE once the 100 team limit is reached! So if you want to guarantee a spot in the race, don't wait!
The top 25 teams from each race will qualify for the Championship Race and a chance to win $2,000! August Championship race in Cincinnati/ December Championship Race in New Orleans.
I am genuinely excited about this opportunity because the Great Amazing Race series supports the 30 MINUTES-A-DAY family initiative, a national program that encourages parents to be a good role model by participating in three daily home activities that have the power to improve their kids academic performance and family quality of life: physical exercise, reading books and eating healthy. The Great Amazing Race is generously allowing my family to participate in this event for free and I hope you will be joining us there! You'll have a chance to win ONE team spot thru a giveaway, because the Great Amazing Race also wants you to participate with us! Keep reading for more info on the giveaway.. We'll get there I promise LOL.. I will be blogging about how our family is preparing to participate, the actual race itself and the 30 MINUTES-A-DAY family initiative.
As soon as I told the kids about this event, they were excited. Although I think it was the natural brother/sister competition they are most excited about right now. We've broken our teams up into boys vs girls.. and not that I'm biased but I think the girls will win! No worries though, because this is strictly going to be a FUN race for our family and it will be stressed as it gets closer that it doesn't matter who actually wins. I don't want either of them disappointed on how fast they run in the race.. I'm just excited about getting out there and being active as a family.
Ok, so now I know you are wondering how you can participate?!
SECURE YOUR TEAM SPOTS: Register online at Great Amazing Race. Team spots are only $40 per team (or $20 if you are active duty, reserves or retired - military, law enforcement or fire, spouses included).

Draw the Circle: The 40 Day Prayer Challenge (Book Review)
0 Comments Posted by Heather from Frugal Southern Living at 4:02 AM
Author: Mark Batterson
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 978-0-3103-2712-7
Quick Summary of Book from Publisher:
"Do you pray as often and as boldly as you want to? There is a way to experience a deeper, more passionate, persistent and intimate prayer life. Drawing from forty days of true stories, Mark Batterson applies the principles of his New York Times best selling book, The Circle Maker, to teach us a new way to pray. As thousands of readers quickly became tens of thousands, true stories of miraculous and inspiring answers to pray began to pour in, and as those stories were shared, others were bolstered in their faith to pray with even more boldness. In Draw the Circle, through forty true, faith-building stories of God's answers to prayer, daily scriptures and prayer prompts, Batterson inspires you to pray and keep praying like never before. Begin a lifetime of watching God work. Believe in the God who can do all things. Experience the power of bold prayer and even bolder faith in Draw the Circle."
My Thoughts:
I have had a relationship with God since I was a little girl, but what it means at the age of 7 (when I was baptized) to where I am now in life (at almost 30) has taken on a completely different meaning. I have been searching for a deeper walk in my faith and have found some really incredible authors to help me find my way on this journey.. Mark Batterson now being one of them! I truly enjoyed reading this book. Although I prayed everyday, this book changed HOW I prayed. Mark explains the importance of having faith when we pray. Remember, "With God all things are possible." So, if we are going to pray and ask for a miracle, shouldn't we believe that God will come thru for us? We shouldn't question or have doubt in God's ability to answer our prayers simply because He may not answer us in the way we wanted or expected.
Since the chapters are so short (about 5-6 pages each), it is really easy to want to move ahead and read the next chapter, because you will get THAT excited about the journey you are about to embark on! However, take the chapters as they are intended and use this throughout the entire 40 days. Prayer and meditate on the words spoken for that day.
My Favorite Quote from "Draw the Circle""
"When Jesus walked out of the tomb, the word impossible was removed from our vocabulary. The size of your prayers depends on the size of your God. If your God is small, you'll pray man-sized prayers. But if your God knows no limits, then neither will your prayers. The God we pray to exists out of the four space-time dimensions He created, and maybe we should pray that way!"
Additional Thoughts on this Book and Mark's Other Books:
This book is a follow-up to his earlier books, "The Circle Maker" and "Praying Circles Around Your Children" and although I wasn't lost, I felt it would have been better to first read the other two books (or at least his main book in this series "The Circle Maker) first. Even though he refers to his book "The Circle Maker" quite often, he also explains enough that you can understand the true meaning behind every word in this devotional. He also prefaces this book by explaining that Bill Rights said that if you are seeking a revival to follow these steps: 1) lock yourself in a room, 2) get on your knees, 3) draw a circle around yourself and 4) pray for the rivival to start in that circle first! Maybe it's just my OCD kicking in, but I don't like to read books out of order and I would liked to read this as a building series as it was intended.
Frugal Southern Living Disclaimer: I did not receive any monetary compensation. I was offered the chance to review a product in exchange for a blog review. Opinions in this review are my honest and unbiased thoughts of this product and yours may vary.
